Rotary Club of Bandar Sungai Petani

Arvind U Gopi Kumar joined Rotary as a charter member of Rotary Club of Bandar Sungai Petani on 15 June 2010. He was approached by PDG Dr Baskaran Gobala Krishnan (then PP) to look for some members to form a new Rotary Club in Sungai Petani as there had not been a club in Sungai Petani for a number of years after the old club was terminated. With gusto, he gathered friends and friends’ friends to charter the new Rotary Club of Bandar Sungai Petani.

He took to Rotary like a duck to water, passionately learning from Rotary gurus and sifus in District 3300 and beyond, at every District Assembly, District Conference, Regional Institute and International Convention. His passion translates into action in his Club, igniting the spark of Service Above Self and living the ideal of People of Action.

He made sure the Club offered the full range of Rotary experiences to its members, encompassing all Five Avenues of Service. He became Club President in 2013-14 and Assistant Governor in 2015-16. He served on the District Secretariat in 18-19 and 20-21, and is serving as District Treasurer in 21-22. He served in the District Nominating Committee and was RYLA Chair in 2014-15. Arvind is the International Chair of the Young Rotarians Fellowship of Rotary International for 2020-22.

A firm believer in The Rotary Foundation good work in the world, he supported the TRF whole-heartedly. He became a Paul Harris Fellow in 13-14, and subsequently a Major Donor in 14-15. He is now a Major Donor Level 3. His Club has been involved

with multiple Global Grant projects as international and local partner. He was District Annual Fund Sub-committee Chair for 4 years from 2017 to 2021 and always led by example with his giving.

In membership development, he has personally brought in many charter members and sponsored many other members. These members have also progressed to sponsor more members and have developed to leadership roles in the Club and District. He was also serving on the ground in the charter of new clubs in the northern region.

Born in 1985, he was 25 when he joined Rotary, and will be the youngest District Governor of District 3300 at 39 years when he takes office in 2024. He was educated at Ibrahim Primary and Secondary Schools. Subsequently, he read law and earned his LL.B. (Hons) London. Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur City Centre

Edward Khoo always acknowledged himself as a “kampung boy” because he grew up in a small town, Labis, in Johor. He graduated from Waterloo, Canada in Economics and Business Administration. Edward Khoo is married to Kim Chin and are blessed with 2 boys. He joined Rotary as a charter member of Rotary Club of Cheras in 1996 and served his presidency in the centennial year of 2004-2005. Later in 2017, he joined Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur City Centre as a charter member to carry out his mission in promoting Mandarin in Rotary.

When RCKLCC was still a young club, and within a short period of time, Edward Khoo initiated the Global Mandarin Development Conference that took place in March 2019. The conference drew participants from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and 4 other countries in South East Asia. Edward Khoo created awareness to promote diversity and inclusion expanding membership within the Mandarin-speaking community. This mission is thus far successful and impactful recruiting more than 200 Mandarin-speaking Rotarians into Rotary.

Being a leader by example, Edward Khoo is a member of The Rotary Foundation's Arch Klumph Society Inner Circle. He was the first to initiate Yayasan Kelab-Kelab Rotary Malaysia's “Edward Khoo Club Project Assistance Grant” to financially match Rotary Clubs with funds to carry out humanitarian projects. Being a Rotarian at heart, Edward Khoo’s grant had created impactful differences that changed lives of many individuals as well as families from Negeri Sembilan to Kedah. Stretching his hand beyond the border, Edward Khoo built houses, drinking water facilities and provide bicycles to the poor in Cambodia under Rotary Global Grant Projects.

A humble and down-to-earth Rotarian, Edward Khoo was hands-on cleaning houses of flood victims during one of the worst floods in the year 2021. Touched by the situation, he shipped food supplies from Johor to keep victims' stomachs filled. When the flood water receded, Edward Khoo raised funds to provide 2,500 school bags filled with dictionaries, pencils, and color pencils to send flood victim children back to school.

Edward Khoo owns several businesses from hospitals to laboratory, and IT to engineering. He took a role behind the scenes in his business during pandemic to hopefully do a little bit more in Rotary while spending valuable time with his family. His mission in developing Mandarin in Rotary has taken a new direction when he was appointed as the Mandarin Track District Trainer for RY 2023-24 to conduct the first full-fledged Mandarin PETS and SETS.
